Guide to Renting a Golf Cart in San Pedro, Belize
Ambergris Caye Main Mode of Transportation
Renting a golf cart gives you flexibility to explore Ambergris Caye, visit restaurants and travel between your accommodation and town. Before booking, consider where you’re staying, how often you’ll drive, your passenger count and the full rental cost.
This guide walks you through choosing a cart, comparing quotes, arranging pickup and getting help during your rental.
Do You Need a Golf Cart for Your Whole Stay?
Your accommodation and plans help determine whether to rent for a day, several days or your entire visit.
If you’re staying in central San Pedro and spending most of your time nearby, walking and occasional taxis may meet your needs. A cart becomes more useful when you plan frequent outings, stay farther from town or want to explore independently.
Compare the total rental cost with the taxi trips you expect to take. A cart offers flexibility, but it isn’t automatically the least expensive option for every visitor.
For boat excursions, ask your tour operator where to meet and where you can leave your cart. Your cart gets you to the departure point; destinations such as Hol Chan Marine Reserve require a boat trip.

Choose Enough Seats—and Plan for Luggage
Choose a cart with a seat for every passenger:
- Four passengers: a 4-seater may suit your group.
- Six passengers: choose a 6-seater or two 4-seaters.
- Separate plans: two carts allow your group to travel independently, although rental costs will differ.
A 6-seater keeps everyone together but needs a longer parking space. Never put six adults on a 4-seater.
Luggage also takes up room. Advanced can use an additional cart to help transport your bags at no extra cost when needed. Tell us about your luggage before arrival so we can prepare.
If anyone has difficulty stepping into a cart, back discomfort or mobility equipment, discuss access and storage before booking. Photos and specific questions can help you assess suitability.
Compare the Full Price Before Paying
A daily rate alone doesn’t tell you the total cost. Before comparing companies, check:
- Whether the quote is in USD or Belize dollars.
- Whether tax and insurance are included in the quoted total.
- What the insurance covers and excludes.
- Delivery and collection charges.
- Fuel requirements.
- Late-return, lost-key, damage and towing charges.
- Cancellation terms and any refund handling fee.
Advanced’s base rates start at US$30 per 24 hours for a 4-seater and US$60 for a 6-seater, with weekly and monthly options. Insurance is US$5 per cart per day, and 12.5% GST applies to the rental and insurance charges.
Your quote will show the total price and what is included. Complimentary services include agreed delivery and pickup, accommodation orientation and luggage assistance when needed. A bridge pass is also included.
Things to Be Aware of Before Renting
San Pedro has reputable golf cart rental companies that work hard to look after visitors. At Advanced Golf Cart Rentals, we strive to keep improving our service through clear pricing, helpful communication and support throughout your rental.
If you’re worried about a golf cart rental scam or a terrible experience, a few practical checks can help you book with confidence. Confirm the full price, document the cart’s condition and understand the rental terms before paying. Here are the concerns to be aware of and how to prepare.
Bait-and-Switch Rates
Be cautious if an advertised rate changes when you arrive or mandatory charges appear only when you are ready to pay. Request a written quote showing the currency, rental period, taxes, insurance and delivery charges. Keep a copy of the agreed total.
Accident Extortion
Threats or pressure to hand over immediate cash after an accident are warning signs. Prioritize your safety, contact the rental company through its official number and seek police assistance if someone threatens you. Request documentation and an itemized explanation of any damage charge rather than accepting an unsupported demand.
Phantom Damage Claims
This means being charged for damage that was already present or did not occur during your rental. Inspect the cart with staff, take clear photos or video and have existing damage recorded before leaving. At return, ask for any claimed new damage to be shown and explained against the original inspection.
Breakdowns and Unclear Support
Ask whom to contact if the cart stops working, when assistance is available and how replacement carts or interrupted rental time are handled. Save the support number before your first drive.
Unclear Cancellation and Return Terms
Check the rules for cancellations, refunds, fuel and late returns before paying. If you agree on a different collection time or unattended return, get the arrangements confirmed in writing.
Our rental policy explains your responsibilities and applicable charges, and our team can answer questions before you book.
Look for Service Details in Customer Reviews
When reading reviews, look beyond the star rating. Find examples that answer practical questions:
- Was someone there when the guest arrived?
- Did staff communicate when travel plans changed?
- Was the cart explained clearly?
- What happened when a problem arose?
- Was collection straightforward?
Advanced’s guests have described airport meetups, luggage assistance, delivery to their accommodation and help resolving cart issues. These accounts give you examples of the team’s service in practice.
Book Ahead and Confirm Your Arrival Arrangements
Carts can book out quickly from December through January 15, and again in March. Reserve early if you need a particular cart size during those periods.
Send Advanced your:
- Rental dates and preferred pickup and return times.
- Passenger count and cart size.
- Flight, water taxi or accommodation details.
- Luggage or access requirements.
No payment is required to submit your request. We reply within 24 hours with availability and an all-inclusive quote. Full payment confirms your reservation; no separate security deposit is required.
Renters must be at least 21 years old and present a valid driver’s license at pickup. Review the cancellation and rental terms before paying.
Poor Maintenance and Warning Signs
A poorly maintained cart can interrupt your plans or create a safety concern. Before accepting your rental, inspect it with the team and ask them to demonstrate its controls. Report anything that seems wrong before driving away.
What to Check Before Leaving
- Brakes: The cart should stop predictably during a controlled demonstration. Report weak braking, an unusually soft pedal or pulling to one side.
- Tires and steering: Look for visibly damaged or flat tires, and report steering that feels loose or difficult to control.
- Lights and horn: Ask staff to demonstrate the headlights, rear lights, indicators where fitted, and horn.
- Starting and power: Report difficulty starting, repeated stalling or unexpected loss of power. For an electric cart, confirm its charge, expected range and charging arrangements.
- Existing damage: Photograph the cart and have visible damage recorded on the rental agreement.
If something appears unsafe, ask for it to be corrected or request another cart before setting off. Save the company’s support number and confirm what happens if a problem develops during your rental.
Inspect the Cart and Complete the Handover
Before leaving, inspect the cart with our team. Photograph its condition and make sure any existing damage is recorded. Check the fuel level and ask about anything you are unsure of.
We explain the controls, lights, fuel requirements, locking procedure and return arrangements. Save our contact number before driving away.
Our team also asks whether you know how to reach your accommodation. If needed, a staff member can lead you there and briefly orient you to town.
If your flight or ferry timing changes, contact us so we can adjust your handover arrangements.
Plan Your Routes, Parking and Evening Outings
Ask about your route before setting out, especially when travelling farther from town. Allow extra time for uneven roads, rain and unfamiliar turns.
Before leaving your cart, check signs and parking restrictions, avoid blocking access, secure it as instructed and take your key and valuables with you. For a boat tour or a longer stop, confirm parking arrangements with the business you’re visiting.
If you expect to return after dark, check your lights before departure and discuss the route with our team. Drive cautiously and arrange another way back if you aren’t comfortable driving the route at night. Never drive after drinking.
Practical Problems to Plan for During Your Rental
Your plans should account for traffic, parking and changing road conditions. A little preparation can make getting around San Pedro easier.
Traffic Before a Flight, Ferry or Tour
Allow extra time to reach your departure point, refuel and complete your return arrangements. If you’re running late, contact our team to coordinate collection.
Parking While You Take a Boat Trip
Before leaving your cart for several hours, ask your tour operator or water taxi company where parking is permitted and whether there are time limits or fees. Confirm arrangements for the specific dock you’re using.
Keeping Your Cart Secure Overnight
Ask your accommodation where guests should park. Take the key, remove valuables and use the locking equipment provided every time you leave the cart. Report a missing cart or damaged lock to our team promptly.
Rain, Puddles and Uneven Roads
Standing water can hide potholes and make road conditions difficult to judge. Avoid driving through water when you cannot see the road surface or assess its depth. If you’re unsure whether to continue, stop somewhere safe and contact our team for guidance.
Changes to Your Outing
A longer stop, a different route or an evening out can change your return plans. Keep our contact number saved and let us know if you need to discuss your route, extend your rental or adjust collection. Extensions depend on availability.
For help planning your outings or dealing with a problem during your rental, contact our local team.
Know How to Get Help
Advanced provides 24/7 roadside assistance for active rentals, including help with wheel changes, battery issues and fuel refills.
If your cart develops a problem, stop somewhere safe and contact us with your location and a description of the issue. We will assess the situation and arrange assistance or a replacement when needed.
Roadside assistance and chargeable towing are different. A towing fee applies when renter-caused damage requires the cart to be towed. Fuel and damage charges are explained in the rental policy.

How to Report a Suspected Rental Scam or Serious Complaint in Belize
Keep your rental agreement, written quote, receipts, messages and photographs. Record what happened, when it happened and the outcome you are requesting.
Contact the Rental Company
For a service issue or disputed charge, request a written explanation and an itemized breakdown. Give the company an opportunity to resolve the issue when it is safe to do so.
Report Suspected Crime to Police
If you suspect fraud, theft, threats or extortion, contact the local police station in San Pedro. For immediate danger or a crime in progress, call 911, as directed by the Belize Police Department.
Submit a Tourism Complaint
The Belize Tourism Board provides a tourism complaint form. Send the completed form and supporting information to [email protected]. Explain the issue clearly so BTB can assess or direct your complaint.
Share an Accurate Review
You can also describe your firsthand experience on Google or Tripadvisor. Explain what happened, how the company responded and whether the issue was resolved. A public review helps other travelers, but it does not replace an official complaint or police report.
Arrange Your Return Before Departure Day
Confirm your return time and collection location before your rental ends. Carts are supplied with a full tank and should be returned full.
If you expect to be late, notify us. A one-hour grace period is provided with notification; further arrangements and any charges depend on demand.
If you need to leave before our team arrives, contact us to agree on an unattended collection. We will confirm where to park, how to secure the cart and where to leave the key. Follow those instructions and the agreed timing.
Our office is open daily from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., with pickup and return outside office hours available by prior arrangement.
Start With Your Dates and Plans
Tell us where you’re staying, how many people are travelling and when you need the cart. We’ll help you choose a suitable option, explain the full cost and coordinate your arrival.
Know Your Costs Before You Book
Unexpected charges and unclear terms can turn a rental into a terrible experience—and leave you wondering whether you’ve encountered a scam. Our quotation generator helps you check the rental cost, insurance and GST before committing, so you can understand the total and ask questions before paying.
If you need help choosing a cart or arranging delivery, contact our team. We’ll confirm availability, explain your quote and coordinate your arrival.
